SO(3) vs. SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice: an investigation at non-zero temperature

The adjoint SU(2) lattice gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions with the Wilson plaquette action modified by a Z(2) monopole suppression term is reinvestigated with special emphasis on the existence of a finite-temperature phase transition decoupling from the well-known bulk transitions.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. Based on contributions to CONFINEMENT 2003 and Lattice2003(topology). To be published in Proceedings of CONFINEMENT 2003, Tokyo, Japa

SO(3) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice

We numerically investigate the phase structure of pure SO(3) LGT at zero and non-zero temperature in the presence of a Z2 blind monopole chemical potential. The physical meaning of the different phases, a possible symmetry breaking mechanism as well as the existence of an order parameter for the finite temperature phase transition are discussed.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures LaTeX file. The Chinese Legal Tradition as a Cultural Constraint on the Westernization of Chinese Environmental Law and Policy: Toward a Chinese Environmental Law and Policy Regime with More Chinese Characteristics

    Get PDF
This Article argues that the Chinese legal tradition is essentially a Confucian legal tradition, and that its Confucian attributes significantly constrain the effectiveness of the Western-style environmental laws enacted by the PRC in recent decades. Part I explores the emergence of a Confucian legal tradition in China and its impact on Chinese legal culture before the founding of the PRC. Part II highlights some of the impacts of this tradition on the Chinese legal system during the same period. Part III makes a case for the endurance of the Confucian essence of this legal tradition in the PRC itself, and highlights its implications for the effectiveness of the PRC’s Western-style environmental laws. This Article concludes with a few preliminary strategic suggestions for making the PRC’s environmental law and policy regime more effective by aligning it more closely with the Confucian essence of the Chinese legal tradition

Fixed twist dynamics of SO(3) gauge theory

We perform a throughout study of 3+1 dim. SO(3) LGT for any fixed-twist background. We concentrate in particular on the physically significant trivial and 1-twist sectors. Introducing a Z(2) monopole chemical potential the 1st order bulk transition is moved down in the strong coupling region and weakened to 2nd order in the 4-dim Ising model universality class. In this extended phase diagram we gain access to a confined phase in every fixed twist sector of the theory. The Pisa disorder operator is employed together with the Polyakov loop to study the confinement-deconfinement transition in each sector. Due to the specific properties of both operators, most results can be used to gain insight in the ergodic theory, where all twist sectors should be summed upon. An explicit mapping of each fixed twist theory to effective positive plaquette models with fixed twisted boundary conditions is applied to better establish their properties in the different phases.Comment: 20 pages, 11 Figures. Computational Fluid Dynamics data for improving freeze-dryers design

    Get PDF
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can be used to simulate different parts of an industrial freeze-drying equipment and to properly design them; in particular data concerning the freeze-dryer chamber and the duct connecting the chamber with the condenser, with the valves and vanes eventually present are given here, and can be used to understand the behavior of the apparatus allowing an improved design. Pilot and large scale freeze-drying chambers have been considered; data of a detailed simulation of a complete pilot scale apparatus, including duct and condenser are included. Data on conductance of an empty duct with different L/D ratio, on disk valves with different geometry, and on mushroom valve are presented. Velocity, pressure, temperature and composition fields are reported on selected planes for chambers and valves. Results of dynamic simulations are also presented, to evaluate possible performance of monitoring device in the chamber. Some further data, with detailed interpretation and discussion of the presented data can be found in the related research article by Barresi et al. [1] and Marchisio et al. [2] [1] A.A. Barresi, V.
